Rust, grease, and other contaminants are no match for us

Chemical pretreatment prepares your parts to be painted. If you’re looking to have an old part repainted, it might need to be stripped of foreign contaminants. Rust, grease, and other grime can inhibit the application of paints. That’s where chemical pretreatment comes in. It strips metal of any contaminants and prepares the part so it can be painted with a perfect application.

Here at Colonial, we offer multiple types of chemical pretreatment, which will work for ferrous as well as non-ferrous materials.

Alkaline Cleaner

Our alkaline cleaner is designed to prepare aluminum, steel, and other ferrous materials for further processing by removing any dirt, oil and grease. It is typically heated to 160 F and paired with our high-pressure wash system for the best cleaning.

Deox/Acid Wash

Our deox/acid wash system removes oxides and alkali residues from the degreasing process. It is commonly paired with our Alodine process to ensure a good bond with the base substrate. The acid solution used is non-etching and safe to apply to virtually any substrate.

Trivalent Chromium Conversion Coating

Our in-house Alodine system is a trivalent chromate conversion coating that can be applied by either immersion or spray, allowing us to process parts of any size. This chemical film coating is an excellent option to enhance corrosion resistance and electrical conductivity. Alodine is certified to military specs MIL-DTL-5541, Type II, both Class 1A and Class 3, and MIL-DTL-81706. Our trivalent chromate is environmentally safe and RoHS and REACH compliant.

Iron Phosphate

Iron phosphate is a chemical coating which improves paint adhesion and corrosion protection on metal surfaces. Our iron phosphate system can remove traces of oil and grease for parts with small amounts of dirt. It is an excellent alternative for small parts that need to be cleaned, but are a little too delicate for blasting.

Citric and Nitric Passivation

Citric and nitric passivation removes free iron ions and creates a protective passive oxide layer for stainless steel products. We can perform both citric and nitric passivation and can also meet ASTM A967 and military specs for this service.

Chemical Paint Stripping

Colonial Surface Solutions does not perform in-house chemical paint stripping. However, we have several vendors that can perform this if required. Please give our office a call and we would be happy to refer you onto our paint stripping vendors.

Heated Pressure Wash

We are also able to prepare parts for painting by pressure washing them, either with high pressure or low pressure. Our pressure wash system can also include our alkaline cleaner for tough dirt, grease, and oil.
